Crib Safety
A baby, newborn to 12 months, should be placed on its back to sleep. It’s important to keep air circulating in the room at all times. Use a firm, tight-fitting mattress in a crib that meets current safety standards. Only a mattress pad and/or waterproof pad and crib fitted sheet should be used between the sleeping baby and the crib mattress. Consider using a sleeper suit as an alternative to a blanket. If you use a blanket, place baby with feet at the foot of the crib and tuck a thin blanket around the crib mattress so that it reaches only as far as the baby’s chest. Make sure it rests on top of, and not underneath the baby, and that baby’s head remains uncovered.
Pillows, plush animals, top sheets and quilts are to be considered decorative only and should always be removed from the crib during sleep time and naptime.
A fitted sheet is your only crib necessity. For safety's sake, make sure fitted crib sheets fit snugly.
Crib bumpers are more than just decorative. They provide a padded layer that keeps little baby arms and legs from slipping through the rails. That said, safety standards have evolved and bumpers are no longer a necessity. If you do choose to add the extra padding for your baby, remember to tuck your bumper between the mattress and the side of the crib so that only three inches are sticking out and make sure to attach the bumper ties securely so it can't come loose. Also remember that when your child can pull him- or herself up, you'll want to remove the bumper so he or she can't use it to climb out of the crib.
Before and after sleep time, it's still fun to exercise your creativity by dressing up the crib with our beautiful crib bedding accessories. We love to use our Baby Quilts and Baby Blankets on the floor as play mats or hung on the wall. Have fun!
